So many of the children we see at Bradley have truly amazing creative gifts that they have unfortunately kept hidden from the world.

Sometimes hiding their gifts can serve as a form of protection and survival from a stressful or threatening environment.

Other times, suppressing their gifts can be the result of fear, embarrassment, or bullying. But these same gifts can often help the children at Bradley light the way to a more hopeful future, if only they receive the support they need to finally learn how to shine.

Evan is the perfect example of a gift who keeps giving.

When Evan first arrived at Bradley, he was very standoffish and kept to himself. If he felt nervous or stressed—which happened often—he would get easily agitated and upset. By keeping himself small, he hoped to avoid attracting attention, opinions, or judgment. But over time, we’ve seen his personality transform beautifully and his self- confidence begin to emerge, especially when it comes to music.

As Evan has taken part in Bradley’s music-related activities, he has demonstrated a remarkable musical talent, both with instruments and his voice. He has even become incredibly helpful to his peers, working alongside them on duets and solo performances for a recent talent show at The Bradley Center.

Recently, while Evan’s father was visiting Bradley, he mentioned that he sings in his church choir. One of our staff members, who is also a musician, told him what an amazing job Evan has been doing. Then he asked if he’d like to hear Evan sing in our Lotus Studio.

They met up later that day—our staff member even brought his guitar—and they were so heartened to see Evan sing and perform with such passion and confidence.

But the truly memorable moment was when Evan asked his dad to join him in singing “Running Down a Dream.”

They sang it together beautifully, and it was clear just how proud his father was, not just of Evan’s voice but also of how far he’s come.

Evan’s reconnection with his dad was such a special and heartwarming moment. It’s also a reminder of the power of healing and hope that’s possible when children at Bradley learn how to use their gifts, raise their voices, and live with confidence as their authentic selves.
